what it’s like to work at Velvet

You might have noticed that when we blog, we rarely talk about Velvet. This is deliberate. We shrink from anything that looks like we might be blowing our own trumpet. We believe that a PR agency should focus on its clients and the issues they face. Talking about how great we are, the awards we have picked up and general ‘ra-ra-ra-ing’ is just not our style. We believe our energies are best channelled in the service of our clients. As far as PR agencies go, we are probably unusual in this, and some might say we are wrong, but it’s the culture we are comfortable with. We are truly fascinated by our clients’ businesses and the sectors they sit within and that’s why we tend to blog about that world rather than broadcasting news about Velvet which is unlikely to interest anyone much!

However we are often asked questions about our culture, and because we are in the throes of recruitment, I thought a few words on this might be useful. People trust each other here. We operate in a very collegiate fashion. We all sit in one open-plan office and are constantly sharing ideas and helping each other solve issues. Flexibility is built into our DNA. There is no clock-watching, no having to be here at a specific starting time in the morning. It’s about delivering great work and being at your desk at 9am does not guarantee results, so we don’t insist on it, not a bit of it. Moreover with smart phones there really is no need to be obsessive about such things. Availability and readiness to act is far more important. It’s a culture where everyone feels confident to have their say, whether they’re a new joiner or have been here for years. We are a very proactive bunch of people. We offer both the freedom to work independently and great team support since the two are essential in the building of a career.

If you like what you’re hearing and are looking for your first role in PR or to build your PR career further, we’d love to hear from you.

Now that’s enough of that. In our next blog post it will be business as usual – no more about Velvet for quite some while!
